Kathryn is also licensed to practice law in North Carolina and the District of Columbia and is admitted to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Washington, DC, the United States District Court, District of South Carolina, and the United States Supreme Court, Washington, DC. Kathryn has been a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys [NAELA] since 1991. In April 1995, Kathryn was the first attorney in South Carolina to become certified as an elder law attorney (CELA) by the National Elder Law Foundation [NELF]after fulfilling all specialization requirements and successfully passing the first examination administered by NELF in November 1994. In 2009, the North Carolina State Board of Legal Specialization (NC Board) launched an alliance with NELF to certify qualifying lawyers as specialists in elder law. In November 2009, Kathryn was among twelve (12) North Carolina attorneys to become the first to be certified by the NC Board as specialists in elder law. In October 2008, Kathryn was invited to join the Council of Advanced Practitioners (CAPS) of NAELA and was accepted into membership. The Council of Advanced Practitioners is a small group of premier elder law attorneys, all of whom have been members of NAELA for at least ten (10) years, are certified as elder law attorneys by NELF, and are AV rated by Martindale Hubbell. Kathryn is a past-President (2000-2002)of the South Carolinas Chapter of NAELA and received the 2004 Oustanding Chapter Member Award. Kathryn is a member of the South Carolina Bar, North Carolina Bar, North Carolina Bar Association, and District of Columbia Bar; past member Board of Directors, past President (2001-2003) and President (2011-2013) of the South Carolina Chapter of NAELA; Member of the North Carolina Chapter of NAELA (2011-current)and Board of Directors of North Carolina NAELA (2011-2013); member of the National College of Probate Judges (2006-current); member (1999-2008), past-Chairperson (2005-2006), and Ex Officio member (2008-2010) of the Probate, Estate Planning and Trust Section Council of the South Carolina Bar; a founding member and Chairperson (2008-2010) of the Elder Law Committee of the South Carolina Bar; member of the Elder Law Section of the North Carolina Bar; a Representative to the South Carolina Bar House of Delegates for the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit, Horry County, SC (July 2006 July 2010 and July 2011-2014); member of the Board of Visitors of North Carolina Central University School of Law (2006-2010); member of the Horry County Probate Court Advisory Committee (2002-current); Board of Governors of the South Carolina Bar for the Third Judicial Region (2011-2014); and past member of various professional and civic organizations, including the Senior Advisory Board to Myrtle Beach City Council and Senior Summit Board of Horry-Georgetown Technical College. Kathryn is a frequent presenter and lecturer on elder law issues at CLEs sponsored by the South Carolina Bar, frequently speaks to various state and community groups on elder law issues, and has been invited to teach about elder law at classes at Coastal Carolina University and Horry-Georgetown Technical College.
